Reading: The
students are working on recognizing literacy elements in a story (character,
setting, problem, solution). We have
also spent a lot of time with compare and contrast. Other
skills we will work on in December are determining genre, plot and theme of
stories.
Our
phonic skills are: words with ce, ge and se endings, words with ou, ow, and
words ending with –ed or –ing.
Math: Our
new unit will include parts and totals (we had this in 1st grade)
but now the numbers will be larger. We
will also do more work with counting change and dollars. Toward the end of the unit, the children will
learn about the adding two 2-digit numbers and using a “ball park” estimate to
check if the answer is correct. If we
stay on track, we should finish this unit before Christmas and have a test
before then as well.

Project Christmas: We are designated as a drop-off spot for
non-perishable food donations as well as other items such as paper/cleaning
products, personal care products, books, toys, socks/underwear, etc., for needy
families in our area. Your child may
bring in donations or it can be dropped off at the elementary office.
The deadline is December 12th. Let's see if we can
fill that box!
Classroom Christmas party: Our classroom Christmas party will be the afternoon of
Thursday, Dec. 19. Thank you to all who
signed up to bring something for our party.
I’ll send a reminder sheet home as the time draws near. We will have a gift exchange for our party. Boys bring in a gift for a boy, and girls
bring in a gift for a girl. The
suggested spending amount is $3.00. We
will play a game to exchange the gifts.
Something new this year is
the “ugly Christmas sweater” event. Mrs.
Vandervlucht is encouraging all students and staff to wear an “ugly Christmas
sweater” on the day of our party.
