Reading: the children have started taking weekly
reading skill tests on their i-pads. The
first test did not go well, based on scores, but the second one was an
improvement. This week our focus is on
poetry. The children will be reading a
variety of poems and discuss the features of poetry. We also have some Christmas poems we will
learn.
Math: Our current math unit involves a variety of
skills. The children have practiced
telling time to the hour, half-hour and by 5 minutes. We have practiced with base-10 blocks and how
they can represent numbers. We will
finish the unit with measuring by feet, inches and centimeters. I plan to have the children take the unit
test next week Wed.
Welcome Evan: We welcomed a new student into our classroom
last week. His name is Evan and he comes
from Cadillac. He has already made some
connections with a few boys in the room (Evan loves the Ninja Turtles) and is
following our routine very well. The
boys and girls have been very helpful in helping him find his way around
(knowing where our lunch table is, where to line up for recess, etc.) Evan is a very nice addition to our class!
Elementary Christmas Musical: This
will be on Monday, December 15 at 7:00. The
students are to be at school by 6:40. We will meet by Mrs. Wiggins and
Mrs. Neverth’s classrooms. For
this program, please have your child wear his/her nice, dress clothing.
Second Grade Santa’s Workshop: We will be having our Santa’s
Workshop on Tuesday, December 16 from 12:30-2:00. We will be making
Christmas gifts and crafts. Each child is asked to bring in $1 dollar to
help cover the cost of supplies. Please send the $1 in by Friday,
December 12. This is a time when we need a few parent helpers, please let
me know if you could help us this afternoon. (You will be very busy as a workshop
helper. Please make arrangements to leave young children at home.)
Classroom Christmas Party: We will have our class party in the afternoon
on Thursday, December 18. The party will begin at 1:00. I
would like each girl to bring in a girl gift and each boy to bring in a boy
gift. The price range for the gifts is $3-$4. It is very
important to stay within this range so that everyone gets a gift of
approximately equal value.
Also, I’ll send
home a separate note for the snacks. I
will be asking most of the children to bring in a cup of something to add to a
trail mix, like we did for Halloween.
Then I’ll need a few people to send in juice boxes, finger jello and
Rice Krispey Treats. If you are willing
to provide something, let me know! Thank
you!
