Project ChristmasA collection box for PROJECT CHRISTMAS is in the hallway by the elementary office, and another one by the middle school office.  Donations of food & clothing may be dropped off until December 11.

Elementary Christmas Musical:  This will be on Monday, December 15 at 7:00.  The students are to be at school by 6:40.  For this program, please have your child wear his/her nice, dress clothing.

Second Grade Santa’s Workshop:  We will be having our Santa’s Workshop on Tuesday, December 16 from 12:30-2:00.  We will be making Christmas gifts and crafts.  Each child is asked to bring in $1 dollar to help cover the cost of supplies.  Please send the $1 in by Friday, December 12.  This is a time when we need a few parent helpers, please let me know if you could help us this afternoon. (You will be very busy as a workshop helper.  Please make arrangements to leave young children at home.)

Classroom Christmas Party:  We will have our class party in the afternoon on Thursday, December 18.  The party will begin at 1:00.  I would like each girl to bring in a girl gift and each boy to bring in a boy gift.  The price range for the gifts is $3-$4.  It is very important to stay within this range so that everyone gets a gift of approximately equal value.

Reading:  Last week we read stories about how animals adapt to survive in their climate.  This week we will be reading and thinking about how animals in stories can teach us a lesson.  We will be listening to the fable The Fox and the Crane.   Then the children will read The Boy Who Cried Wolf.  Our reading strategies will be making, confirming and revising predictions about a story.

Our phonic skill this week is working on short u and long u (u-e) sounds.

Our grammar skill this week will be adding suffixes (word endings:  -ful, -ly) to words.

Math:  The children will be learning some new strategies for subtraction.  We will practice using an addition equation to help solve a subtraction equation.  The children will also learn about “counting down through 10” and “counting up through 10” as strategies for solving equations where they have to subtract from a number greater than 10.  Look for home links this week that will further explain the strategy.

*The children learned a new game last week called Salute.  It’s played with 3 people and uses number cards 1-10.  You may play this game with a regular deck of cards, using the aces as 1s and removing the face cards.  Or, if you have the game Skip-bo, those cards will work too.  (Skip-bo is a inexpensive card game found at Wal-mart or Meijers.)
