Reading: We have been reading a lot of non-fiction and
finding the main idea or supporting details in the text. This week’s readings are narrative
non-fiction about a man who traveled many miles to share books with other
communities.
For phonics,
the children will be learning about the different spellings for long o (oa, oe,
o-e) this week and long u spellings next week.
We’ve also practiced contractions and learned about similes.
This week the
children will work on past- and future-tense verbs.
In writing, the
children are writing a realistic fiction story that has to do with
stargazing. The kids were excited to
read about space in their science textbooks and their anthology last week. They are enjoying adding some of the facts
they’ve learned into their stories.
Math: The children have had a lot of practice
adding coins and determining change back.
We have also reviewed change to more, change to less and parts &
totals in this unit. Our final skill
will be adding multi-digit numbers and doing so with different strategies (base
10 blocks, number line, number grid). We
are planning to have the unit test on Friday, Jan. 30.
Coin Purses: The children have been busy earning
coins! Everyday your child reads and
returns the book/folder, completes a math home-link and stays on green he/she
earns a penny. Every time your child
gets a 100% on a test (spelling, reading, math, computer) he/she earns a
nickel. Your child will have the
opportunity to visit the classroom “store” on Thursday. We have a high school student helping us
three days a week and she will run the store.
